The Low Toxin Journey: Why I Prefer This 2-Ingredient DIY Over Store-Bought Sprays

If you’ve ever walked into a room, spritzed a “freshener,” and immediately felt a headache or a stuffy nose creeping in, you are not alone.

We can definitely relate. Our family sinuses can be sensitive to the synthetic fragrances found in most commercial room sprays and plug-in diffusers. It’s that tell-tale chemical pungentness that makes one wonder, “Wait, am I breathing in ‘Fresh Linen’ or a cocktail of artificial irritants?”

Today, I’m showing you how I reclaim the vibe of our family space and my maternal peace with this simple, two-ingredient DIY room spray that actually smells like nature, not a laboratory.

Why I Prefer Essential Oils to Synthetic Scents

When you’re doing your best to live a more “holistically realistic” life, you start to realize that your external environment has a massive, measurable impact on your body.

We’ve become comfortable thinking of commonly-used room sprays and plug-ins as normal to use, but synthetic fragrances are documented “chemical cocktails” designed to linger in the air; and therefore in our bodily systems.

Many of the popular products in the room scents category contain phthalates, which are often used to make the scent last longer. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors; they are reported to interfere with the body’s hormones, potentially impacting everything from your cycle to your thyroid health.

Beyond the endocrine system, these synthetic compounds can act as respiratory irritants, triggering more than just a “stuffy nose.” They can cause headaches, dizziness, and eye irritation.

For those with sensitive nervous systems, that synthetic sharpness isn’t just an annoyance. It acts as a physical stressor that can put the body into a low-level “fight or flight” response before a person has even consciously registered the smell.

Switching to alternatives like essential oils isn’t about being “perfect” or anti-convenience; it’s about curating a home that actively supports your physiology rather than working against it. It’s about choosing a rhythm that feels good because it is biologically safe, not just aesthetically pleasing.

The “Travel-Friendly” DIY Room Spray

We’re currently on the road, and I realized I had forgotten my usual refillable bottles. I needed a quick, realistic solution that didn’t involve waiting for a three-day shipping window. A quick trip to the store later, and I had exactly what I needed:

The Bottle: I grabbed a glass spray bottle. While I usually prefer amber glass to protect the integrity of the essential oils from light degradation, I settled for what was available. Pro-tip: If you find one with a rubber base, grab it; it adds that extra bit of protection and anti-slipperiness, especially when you’re traveling!

The Scent: I picked up a blend of Eucalyptus & Rosemary this time. It’s crisp, herbal, earthy, and grounding. It’s the perfect sensory “reset” button for a living or bathroom space.

The Base: Always use distilled water. It’s free from the minerals, chlorine, and impurities found in tap water, which ensures your spray lasts longer and doesn’t get that “stagnant” smell over time.

How to Mix Your Own (In 60 Seconds)

Fill your bottle with distilled water, leaving a little air room near the top.

Add 10–20 drops of your chosen essential oil blend. (Start with 10; you can always add more if you like a stronger scent).

Shake well before every use, as the oils and water will naturally separate.

BONUS TIP: Add a 3rd super simple ingredient; 1-2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol to help with long-term preservation and dispersing the oils through the water.

That’s it. No complicated chemistry, no hidden ingredients. Just a clean, refreshing atmosphere.

A Quick Note on Safety

Before you start spritzing, a little mindfulness goes a long way.

Some essential oils, like tea tree, eucalyptus, citrus, and peppermint, can be potent to different human and animal noses.

*If you share your space with pets or have family members with sensitivities, take a moment to research which oils are safe for your specific household.
